YOUNGSTOWN - A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Monday at 10 a.m. at St. Brendan Church for Sandy Alvino, 94, who passed away Saturday, March 19.
Sandy was born Nov. 1, 1921, in Trivigliano, Italy, a son of the late Anthony and Olivia (Cinti) Alvino. He resided in Youngstown since the age of 5.
Sandy was a graduate of Chaney High School. He enlisted in the U.S. Air Force during World War II and proudly served in active duty in Germany, Italy, and Africa. He was a member of the 449th Bombardment Squadron and earned European, African, and Middle Eastern medals, along with two bronze stars during the war. When he returned home, he was employed by the Republic Steel Corporation for 38 years, retiring in 1982.
He was a member of St. Brendan's Parish, the Altar of Rosary Society, and the Italian Americans Club. He was a strong, independent, and compassionate man who always put family first in everything he did.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Mary Alvino, who passed away in 1994.
He is survived by his son, Anthony (Diana) Alvino; his granddaughters, Alison and Andrea, and their spouses, Matt Caldwell and Danny Fink.
Professional arrangements are being handled by the Higgins-Reardon Funeral Homes, Boardman-Canfield Chapel.
