CANFIELD - Sister M. Gertrude Paris, OSU, died at the Ursuline Motherhouse just after midnight on Wednesday, Feb. 7, 2018, two days after her 88th birthday.

Delores Carmyleen Paris was born Feb. 5, 1930, in Struthers, the daughter of James and Josephine Spadaro Paris.

Sister Gertrude graduated from Struthers High School in 1948. She then attended the University of Pittsburgh for a year prior to joining the Ursuline Sisters of Youngstown.

She entered the Ursuline Sisters on June 21, 1949, and entered the novitiate on Jan. 8, 1950. She made perpetual profession of vows on Jan. 5, 1955.

Sister Gertrude earned a BSE from Youngstown State University in 1955, and an MA in Administration from the University of Notre Dame in 1960. She also did post-graduate work at Kent State University.

In 51 years of active ministry, Sister Gertrude held a variety of positions. She taught at St. Nicholas, Struthers, SS. Peter and Paul, St. Ann, St. Columba, and Immaculate Conception elementary schools in Youngstown, as well as Cardinal Mooney and Ursuline High Schools. She served as principal at St. Rose, Girard and St. Nicholas, Struthers. For 22 years, Sister Gertrude worked in the Finance Department at the Diocese of Youngstown.

Sister Gertrude also served on a variety of boards and in leadership roles. She served on the Diocesan Financial Advisory Board, the Diocesan Insurance Board, the Diocesan Investment Committee, the Diocesan Review Committee, the Diocesan Fiscal Managers Association, and Regina Health Care Center Board. She was also a member of the National Catholic Education Association and served on the Leadership Team of the Ursuline Sisters from 1996 to 2002.

In 2000, Sister Gertrude was given the Pro Ecclesia et Pontifice award, a pontifical award given in recognition of her long and dedicated service to the church and the local community. She also received the 1975 Freedom Foundation at Valley Force American Educator Medal.

Sister Gertrude leaves her Sisters in the Ursuline Community and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her sisters, Helen Flauto and Rose Perry; and brothers, Paul and Joseph Paris.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, Feb. 12, 2018, at 5 p.m. at the Ursuline Motherhouse, 4250 Shields Road. Friends may call prior to the funeral beginning at 3 p.m. at the Motherhouse.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the Ursuline Sisters of Youngstown.
