Sister Mary William Yurko, O.S.U., 89

YOUNGSTOWN ­ Sister Mary William Yurko, O.S.U., 89, of the Ursuline Sisters of Youngstown, died Thursday, Oct. 25.
She was born Anne G. Yurko in Youngstown on July 20, 1918, the daughter of George and Mary Kramer Yurko.
After graduating from Chaney High School in 1936, she entered the Ursuline Sisters of Youngstown on Feb. 1, 1951 and professed final vows on Aug. 10, 1956.
Sister Mary William earned a bachelor¹s of science in education at Youngstown State University in 1958 and a master¹s of arts in education in 1963 from the University of Notre Dame. She also attended the Catholic University of America in Washington D.C. and the Notre Dame Pontifical Institute in Middleburg, Va.
In her 44 years of active ministry, Sister Mary William taught at Holy Name,
Immaculate Conception, St. Patrick, Holy Family, St. Nicholas and St. Luke
elementary schools. She served as principal at St. Nicholas, Holy Name and SS. Cyril & Methodius. When SS. Cyril & Methodius School closed in 1983, she continued to minister at the parish as a pastoral associate. In addition, Sister Mary William conducted catechist training for the Diocese of Youngstown and taught teacher education courses at Youngstown State University.
After retiring in 1996, she continued to be active in ministry at the
Motherhouse, most recently praying for the needs of the church and the world. During the last year of her life, Sister Mary William lived at the St. Angela Center in Pepper Pike.
Sister Mary William leaves her Sisters in the Ursuline Community; sisters,
Rosemary Munshower of Pennsylvania, Jeanette Joseph Rigelsky and Loretta
Leonard Kosar of Youngstown; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents and four brothers, Rev. William Yurko, Thomas Yurko, John Yurko and Rev. Augustine Yurko, O.S.B.
Funeral services will be held at the Ursuline Motherhouse, 4250 Shields Road in Canfield, where friends may call today from 4 to 8 p.m.
The funeral liturgy will be Saturday, Oct. 27, at 11 a.m. at the Motherhouse Chapel followed by burial at Calvary Cemetery.
Donations may be made to the Ursuline Sisters of Youngstown.
