AUSTINTOWN - Prayers will begin Thursday at 9:30 a.m. at the Higgins-Reardon Funeral Home, Austintown Chapel followed by a Mass of Christian Burial celebrated at 10 a.m. at the Immaculate Heart of Mary Church for Stephen "Red" Mackos, 58 who died unexpectedly after a short illness Sunday at his home.
Steve was born June 5, 1952, in Youngstown, the son of Stephen "Shorty" and Marilyn Burke Mackos.
He had served in the Army Reserves from 1971 to 1975. He was a proud member of UAW Local 1112 and retired from GM Lordstown in 2003, after 32 years of service. After his retirement, his greatest joy was spending time with his three grandchildren.
Steve was an avid sports fan and was a coach and secretary for Austintown Little League for six years and was an assistant varsity coach and head JV coach for 10 years for Austintown Fitch High School.
Steve is survived by his wife, the former Kathy McGahagan, whom he married Nov. 11, 1972, they made their home in Austintown for the past 38 years; his four daughters, Shannon, Kristy Ray McLain, Megan Jeremy Moore and Kayla and her fiance, Albert Buttry; his son, Shawn; his sister, Maribeth Mackos Viola of Kentucky; three grandchildren, Kyle and Colin Moore and Haley McLain; 30 nieces and nephews; and 18 great-nieces and nephews.
Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Higgins-Reardon Funeral Home, Austintown Chapel.
The family has requested that material tributes take the form of donations in Steve's name to the American Cancer Society or the Make-A-Wish Foundation.
