Austintown - Prayers will be held Saturday at 10 AM at Higgins-Reardon Funeral Home Austintown Chapel followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 AM at Immaculate Heart of Mary Church, with Fr. Stephen Popovich officiating, for Stephen W. Rushen, 84, who passed away Monday evening at St. Elizabeth Hospital.
Stephen was born Sept. 1, 1924 in Youngstown, the son of Stephen and Ann Kopnitsky Rushen.
Stephen graduated from Campbell Memorial High School class of 1943. After graduation he went into the US Navy in Jan. of 1944 to 1946, serving in South France and Italy. European and African Theaters during WWII where he got awarded the European-African Campaign Medal, American Campaign Medal and World War II Service Medal. He attended Carneigie Tech where he studied engineering. Stephen was employed with US Steel for 35 years retiring in 1983 as a supervisor in Power and Fuel. Stephen was a member of the American Legion Post 0888; Knights of Columbus McDonald Fr. Coan Council # 4658 charter and honorary life member; charter member of the Austintown AARP Chapter 4339; a trustee with the 55 Plus Club of Mineral Ridge. Stephen loved building model airplanes but he enjoyed most working on his mini mill of US Steel Youngstown Works. He was a fan of the Pittsbugh Steelers and Notre Dame Football Teams. His greatest love was for his family especially being with his grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Stephen leaves his wife the former Helen V. Noufer whom he married Jan. 15, 1947 in St. Patrick Church in Youngstown; his children Pamela Ivan Croell of Austintown, William Marilyn Rushen of McDonald, Deborah Dennis Barnhart of Butler, PA, and Mary Kirk Gegick of Wadsworth; his grandchildren Melissa Pittman, William Rushen, Lisa Netroe, Stephen Rushen serving in the Army in Texas, Rebecca Dancik, Victoria Rushen, Virginia Gegick, and Katerina Gegick; his great grandchildren Michael Rushen, Joshua Pittman, Melanie and Sarah Netroe, Morgan and Tyler Rushen, and Evan and Madeline Dancik; his brother Charles Roseann Rushen of Boardman and his sister Eva Tiihonen of Alpharetta, GA; many nieces and nephews and two special nieces Jeannie Giansante and Barbara Potts both of Youngstown.
Stephen was preceded in death by his parents and an infant son Stephen Edward in 1961.
The family will be receiving friends Friday from 4 to 8 PM and Saturday from 9 to 10 AM at the funeral home.
The Rosary will be recited by the Knights of Columbus Council #3930 Monsignor Mears Friday at 7:30 PM.
