New Middletown - A Funeral Mass will be celebrated Monday morning at 11:00 AM at St. Paul the Apostle Church in New Middletown for Steve J. Tabaka Sr. age 87 of New Middletown who passed away Thursday at the Caprice Care Center in North Lima. Steve was born December 10, 1920 in Pittsburgh, PA, the son of Frank and Catherine Mogelski Tabaka. He was a WWII Army Infantry Veteran. He had served in the Central European theater and participated in the "Battle of the Bulge" earning numerous awards for his service including three Bronze Stars.
Prior to his service in WWII he had worked at Metal Carbides. After the service he began a Masonry Contracting Partnership with his brother Bill. In 1958 he and three of his brothers founded Lumber City in Boardman which they operated for 44 years until retiring after its sale in 2002.
He was a charter member of St. Paul the Apostle Church, a member of the VFW Post in New Springfield, the Croatian Club in Bessemer, the Johnson Club in Hillsville and enjoyed Bowling, Bocce and especially golfing.
He is survived by his wife the former, Frances Grusykowski whom he married October 16, 1948, two daughters Kathy Tom Voytko of New Middletown, Patty Bill Johnston of New Waterford, four sons, Bob Libby Tabaka of Poland, Steve Tabaka Jr. of New Middletown, Ed Francine Tabaka of New Middletown, and Rich Tabaka of Poland, granddaughters, Rachel Luke Liquore, Brooke Tabaka, and Jaclyn and Jillian Tabaka, five grandsons, Bob Chantal Johnson, Ron Jen Johnson, Josh Tabaka, Andrew Voytko and Brent and Ross Tabaka, two great-granddaughters; Hannah and Jessica Johnston, a sister Mary Tabaka of New Middletown, three brothers, Bill Mary Tabaka of Boardman, Frank Julie Tabaka of Poland, and Chester Nancy Tabaka of New Middletown.
Besides his parents he was preceded in death by three sisters; Nellie Tabaka, Josephine Jasinski, and Teresa Serenko, and two brothers; Ted and George Tabaka.
Friends may call from 4 PM to 7 PM Sunday at the Higgins-Reardon Funeral Home Poland Chapel and Monday morning from 10:00 AM until 10:45 AM at St. Paul the Apostle Church.
The family has requested that material tributes take the form of donations to either the local chapters of the American Cancer Society or Alzheimer Care in Steve's memory.
