POLAND - Susan Lee Phelan, 62, passed away Tuesday morning, following a 34-year battle with Multiple Sclerosis.
She was born in Warren on May 19, 1952, to the late Herbert J. Clarke and Natalie E. Franklin Clarke Hillegas.
Susan was a 1970 graduate of Liberty High School, a 1972 graduate of Endicott College, and a 1974 graduate of Mount Union College, with a Bachelor of Science Degree in K-8 Education. She was a member of the sorority, Alpha Xi Delta. After graduation she went to work at the Shenango Steel Co. for six years.
Susan married James Spencer Phelan on Sept. 17, 1977, and together they had two daughters, Jamie Sue and Pamela Elaine.
She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Youngstown, where she was once the secretary of the Women's Association. She was a devoted mother and homemaker. She loved dancing, swimming, camping, crocheting, traveling, and cooking. Despite her diagnosis, she was continually active in her community, volunteering for the PTA and helping to open the recycling center in Poland. She was an inspiration to many people. She will be remembered for her generosity, kindness, and ever-present smile.
She is survived by her two daughters, Jamie Sue Phelan of Poland and Pamela Elaine Zitello and her husband, Kenneth Baird Zitello, of Poland; her grandson, Spencer James Zitello; her brother, John C. Clarke of Canfield; her sister, Shari C. Clarke of Boardman; her mother; and an uncle, Carl A. Franklin of Poland, as well as many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.
She was preceded in death by her father and her husband, who died on May 21, 2007.
Family and friends may call Monday from 5 to 8 p.m. and one hour prior to service on Tuesday at the Higgins-Reardon Funeral Home, Poland Chapel. A service will be held Tuesday at 11 a.m. at the funeral home. Internment to follow at Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Boardman.
