Thelma Backus

BOARDMAN ? Services will be Friday at 1 p.m. at the Higgins-Reardon Funeral Home, Boardman-Canfield Chapel for Thelma Backus, 91, who died early Wednesday morning at St. Elizabeth Health Center in Boardman.
Thelma was born March 17, 1918 in Delta, the daughter of Vern and Rosetta Luke.
She attended Bowling Green University and The Ohio State University and had taught in local schools.
Thelma supported and volunteered for many community organizations. She was a member of the Pleasant Grove Church and had taught Sunday school classes at the old Foster Memorial Church.
She was a member of the Y.W.C.A. board of trustees and the Garden Forum board. Thelma also loved to read, play bridge and golf.
She is survived by her husband of over 67 years, Dr. Gilbert Backus; a son, Gilbert Gretchen Backus Jr. of Boardman; a daughter, Dorothy Steven Battaglia of New Jersey; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Friends may call from 11:30 a.m. until the time of service Friday at the Higgins-Reardon Funeral Home, Boardman-Canfield Chapel.
The family has requested that material tributes take the form of donations to the Pleasant Grove Church and Home Instead Healthcare in Thelma?s memory.
