YOUNGSTOWN - Funeral services will be held on Wednesday at noon at the Higgins-Reardon Funeral Homes, Austintown Chapel, for Thomas F. Kurtz, 88, who died unexpectedly on Friday, at his home.
Thomas was born Dec. 12, 1926, in Youngstown, the son of Nicholas and Anna (Merdich) Kurtz.
He was a 1945 graduate of Chaney High School and attended Youngstown College. Thomas worked in transportation management at U.S. Steel for 38 years, until his retirement in 1980.
Thomas was also a veteran of the U.S. Army and served his country during the final days of World War II.
Thomas was an avid golfer since the age of 14 and was a member of several leagues throughout the years. He organized a weekly Saturday golf group at Mill Creek Golf Course in the 1960s, and still participated in it today.
He is survived by his wife, the former Kathleen M. Foley, whom he married May 13, 1947; two sons, Thomas F. Kurtz Jr. of Columbus and David E. Kurtz of Austintown; five grandchildren, Eric (Lauren) Kurtz of Lakewood, Colo., Christopher (Ann) Kurtz of Denver, Sarah Kurtz of Nashville, Tenn., James (Kristin) Ferguson of Struthers, and Kerri Ferguson of Boardman; and seven great-grandchildren.
Thomas was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Mary Jane Horan; and three brothers, Joseph, John and Leo Kurtz.
Family and friends may call on Wednesday from 11 a.m. to noon at the funeral home.
