MECHANICSBURG, PA. ? Prayers will begin Monday morning at 9:15 a.m. at the Higgins-Reardon Funeral Home, Boardman-Canfield Chapel followed by a Mass of Christian Burial celebrated at 10 a.m. at St. Dominic Church for Thomas L. Ryan, 93, formerly of Maple Ave. in Niles, who died Friday after a short illness at Health South Rehabilitation Hospital in Mechanicsburg.
He was born Nov. 2, 1916, in Niles, the son of Thomas C. Ryan and Nellie Sullivan Ryan.
He graduated from Niles McKinley High School and attended Ohio University before enlisting in the U.S. Navy in August 1940, where he served as a wartime Lieutenant Commander. Ryan returned to Ohio University after the War, graduating with a degree in Journalism in 1947.
Ryan was a pioneer in the post-World War II field of public relations, working for a variety of Ohio organizations before joining the Columbia Gas Transmission System, where he worked in Columbus, Pittsburgh and Charleston, W. Va. before retiring as Director of Public Relations. He subsequently worked for the Pennsylvania Gas Association in Harrisburg, Pa. before retiring in 1981.
He was married to Eileen C. McDougall, of Youngstown on May 25, 1943, and they celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in 1993.
Ryan was preceded in death by his wife and daughter, Maureen C. Ryan.
He is survived by two sons, Thomas J. Ryan of Valparaiso, Ind. and Dennis M. Ryan of Arlington Heights, Ill.; two daughters, Kathleen A. Ryan of Carmel, N.Y. and Patricia A. Mihallo of Scarsdale, N.Y.; and three grandsons, Ryan E. Mihallo and Mark P. Mihallo of Scarsdale and Brendan Burkhart of Carmel.
Friends may call at the Higgins-Reardon Funeral Home, Boardman-Canfield Chapel on Sunday from 4 to 7 p.m.
