Valentine Eicher

Youngstown - Services will be Thursday at 9:15 AM at the Higgins-Reardon Funeral Home Boardman-Canfield Chapel, and at 10:00 AM at St. Patrick Church in Youngstown for Mr. Valentine J."Val" Eicher, Sr. age 99 of Youngstown formerly of Canton who passed away Sunday evening at Park Vista Retirement Center. Valentine was born November 16, 1905, in St. Michael, Minnesota the son of Matthew and Louise Jaeb Eicher the eldest of their twelve children.
Val will always be remembered for his positive attitude and his enthusiasm for life and work.
During the depression he had worked at a German Tailor Shop, at a Dry Cleaner, and delivered milk by horse and buggy. After his marriage to his wife the former Bertha Sponseller they farmed the Sponseller Farm. He had also worked in the personnel department at Timken Roller and Bearing Company from 1942 until his retirement in 1970. After his retirement he drove cars in Canton for local car dealerships until 1985. He was a member of St. Joan of Arc Church in Canton, the Swiss Club, and the Pro Football Hall of Fame Club. Val enjoyed farming, carpentry, yard work, sports, music, and was an all around handyman.
After moving to Youngstown in 2001, he became a member of St. Patrick Church.
He was preceded in death by his first wife the former Mildred Haren whom he married July of 1929, and who died August of 1934, and his second wife, the former Bertha L. Sponseller whom he married July of 1936, and who died September 27, 1988.
He is survived by two daughters, Mary Lou Eicher and her husband Ed Palquta of Youngstown, and Shirley Maul of Cincinnati, two sons John and wife Joan Eicher of Alliance, and James Eicher of Beaver Creek, Ohio, three sisters, Clara Hermes of St. Paul, Minnesota, Alma Kienzle of Hopkins, Minnesota, and Lenore and husband John Grann of Perth, North Dakota, a brother Howard and wife Lenore Eicher of St. Michael, Minnesota, four grandsons, John Bonnie Eicher, Donald Mary Eicher, Geoffrey Jill Eicher, and Jesse Maul, nine great-grandchildren, Kurt, Christopher, Matthew, Lauren, Max, Madeleine, Alexandra, Andrew, John Luke and many nieces and nephews.
Besides his wives he was preceded in death by two sisters Sr. Marie Eicher SSND, and Esther Burger, and five brothers, Peter, Walter, Roman, Alvin, and Vernon Eicher.
The Eicher family would like to thank the Park Vista staff and caregivers for the devoted love, care, and happiness they gave to Val during his 4 1/2 years at the retirement center.
Material tributes may take the form of donations to St. Patrick Church in Youngstown.
Friends may call from 4 to 8 PM Wednesday at the Higgins-Reardon Funeral Home, Boardman-Canfield Chapel.
