Vincent Gilmartin

CANFIELD - A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. at St. Christine's Church, Youngstown for Attorney Vincent E. Gilmartin, 83, who died early Monday morning at St. Elizabeth Boardman Health Center.

He was born Jan. 17, 1928, in Youngstown and was a son of James and Catherine Rice Gilmartin.

Mr. Gilmartin attended St. Brendan's Elementary School and was a 1946 graduate of Ursuline High School, where he was senior class president. He received his B.A. from Harvard College in 1950 and J.D. from Ohio Northern University in 1954. He served in the U.S. Army from 1954 until 1956 and was stationed in Hamburg, Germany.

Vincent served as Assistant Attorney General for the State of Ohio and as Assistant Law Director for the City Of Youngstown. In 1968, he was elected Prosecuting Attorney of Mahoning County for four consecutive terms. In 1985, he returned to private practice and received the Professionalism Award from the Mahoning County Bar Association in 2007 and Inducted into the Mahoning County Democratic Party Hall of Fame in 2009. Vincent retired from practice in December of 2008.

He was a member of St. Christine Parish, where he served as Parish Council President. He also served on the 75th anniversary committee at St. Brendan's Church. He was a member of the Mahoning Valley St. Patrick's Parade and had served as Master Of Ceremony for many years. In 1986, he was Grand Marshal of the parade and in 1988 received the Bill Ockerman Award.

He was a member of the Ancient Order of Hibernian's, Joseph T. Nalley, Division No. 6 and was Irishman of the Year in 2000 and was a member of the Gaelic Society. Vincent was a fourth degree Knight with The Knights of Columbus Council No. 274. He was also active with the Saxon Club. He was a Yankee and Steelers fan, but loved the Ursuline Irish.

Vincent leaves his wife, the former Julaine Roscoe, whom he married June 11, 1960; thee daughters, Eileen Kenneth Turocy of Youngstown, Denise James Fields of Hawaii and Christine Gilmartin of Westlake; a sister, Catherine Coyle of Youngstown; a brother, Thomas P. Gilmartin; and a granddaughter, Annabelle Fields.

He was preceded in death by a brother, James L. Gilmartin.

Vincent will best be remembered as being the Professional Irishman. He would sing Irish songs and recite poetry at the drop of a hat. He was a true, blue, tried and true Irish Catholic.

Friends may call Wednesday from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Higgins-Reardon Funeral Home, Austintown Chapel.
