CANFIELD - Vincent Mastromatteo, 87, died on Tuesday, December 10, 2024.
He was born on February 17, 1937, in Vieste, Italy, a son of Antonio and Carmela (Laprocina) Mastromatteo.
Vincent came to the United States in 1955 from Vieste (Foggia) Italy. He was employed by Republic Steel, LTV and WCI Corp., in Warren, Ohio as a welder and belonged to Local 1375. He also worked as a barber since 1968 in Mahoning and Trumbull Counties.
He was a member of St. Joseph's Church in Austintown and served as an usher, eucharistic minister and Vice President of the Men's Club. He was a third degree Knight of Columbus - Niles Council 1681. Vincent was a member of the Morra Club of Youngstown and he was a chairman of the first Wine Tasting Competition of the Youngstown Italian Festival.
Vincent was chosen as the senior citizen resident of Austintown to help break ground for the now Austintown school’s campus.
As a FIFA and OHSAA soccer referee since 1974, he officiated regular season and semifinal games throughout the state. He received a Referee of the Year Award in 1992. He also officiated national teams at the University of Notre Dame campus for several years.
Vincent is survived by his wife, the former Donna Jean Packard; two daughters, Melina Orr and Eva (Mike) Diaz; three granddaughters, Natalia, Olivia, and Gabriella; grandson, Anthony; brother in law, Peter Packard III; several nieces and nephews in the area and in Italy.
In addition to his parents, Vincent was preceded in death by his brothers, Michael and Nicola Mastromatteo; sisters, Antonietta Mastromatteo, Lucille Merlo, Nicoletta Rinaldi, and Santina Pagano; and son in law, Dr. Robert J. Orr.
Calling hours will be held from 10 am until Noon on Monday, December 16, 2024, at St. Joseph Parish in Austintown. A Mass of Christian Burial will immediately follow at Noon.
He will be laid to rest in Resurrection Cemetery.
