YOUNGSTOWN - A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Saturday at 10 a.m. at St. Luke Church for Virgilio Sammarco, 81, who passed away Wednesday morning at Masternick Memorial.
Virgil was born Nov. 27, 1930, in Cosenza Calabria, Italy, a son of the late Luigi and Concetta Puzzitti Sammarco.
Virgil worked for Federal Iron Works from 1950 to 1960. He then became part owner of Metalcrafts Inc. until his retirement in 2000.
He was a member of St. Luke's Holy Name, Latin Culture Foundation, and the Sons of Italy Lodge.
Virgil was an avid bowler on leagues at Camelot Lanes. He also was an avid golfer and was a member of the St. Luke's Golf and Bocce Leagues. Virgil enjoyed playing cards and going to the casino and was a Cleveland Browns and Indians fan. His greatest love was having dinner with his family.
Virgil leaves his wife, the former Carole B. Fickers, whom he married Aug. 20, 1955; three daughters, Victoria Gary Sciortino of Austintown and their two children, Gina and Gary Sciortino Jr., Virginia Brian Mackey of Boardman and their four children, Dana Kelly Patton, Lauren Matthew Dineen, and Scott and Jenna Mackey, and Louanne Kevin Brogley of Canfield and her two children, Mark and Jamie Hopkinson; two sons, Edward Nancy Sammarco of Overland Park, Kan. and their three children, Eric Erin Sammarco, and Andrea and Allyson Sammarco, and Tony Sandra Sammarco of Canfield and their three children Michael, Nicholas and Alexandra; a great-grandson Colin Dineen; two sisters, Irene Silvio Pugliese and Emma Rocco Aiello both of Italy; his mother-in-law, Elizabeth Siman of North Lima; and his nieces and nephews.
Virgil was also preceded in death by a sister, Clementine Salerno.
Family and friends may call Friday from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Higgins-Reardon Funeral Homes, Poland Chapel and Saturday from 9 to 9:45 a.m. at St. Luke's Church.
Material tributes may take the form of donations to the Rescue Mission or St. Vincent DePaul Dining Room on Front Street.
Burial will take place at Calvary Cemetery.
