YOUNGSTOWN - A Funeral of Divine Liturgy will be held on Saturday at 10 a.m. at St. Mary's Byzantine Catholic Church for William J. Bailey Sr., 73, who passed away Tuesday morning.
William was born Dec. 30, 1943, in Youngstown, son of the late Lawrence and Stella (Serensky) Bailey.
William was a 1962 graduate of Ursuline High School. At the age of 16, William started working for Holly Beverage and was employed there for many years. He served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War from 1966 to 1969. William worked in security at the Youngstown Sheet and Tube from 1969 to 1983. Then in 1984, completed the Ohio Peace Officers Course and became a police officer for the Youngstown Police Department for 27 years, retiring in 2012. While employed for YPD, he also worked in security at Youngstown State University.
William was a member of the F.O.P and the Ohio Patrolmen's Benevolent Association. In his spare time, he enjoyed collecting coins, cars, and trains. He also enjoyed his trips to the casinos and also appeared on Cash Explosion in April.
William leaves his wife, the former Marilyn L. Waback, whom he married Dec. 28, 1968; two sons, Captain William J. (Tami) Bailey Jr., JAGC, USN, of Midlothian, Va. and Dr. Tom A. (Michelle) Bailey of Austintown; three grandchildren, Ensign Bradley W. Bailey USN, Midshipman, 2nd Class, Benjamin F. Bailey USNR, and Brooke E. Bailey; a stepgrandson, Justin Mondok; a sister, Carolyn Bardash of Youngstown; a sister-in-law, Nancy (Jim) Zone of Austintown; brother-in-law, Andy (Phyllis) Waback of Boardman; and many nieces and nephews.
Family and friends may call Friday from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Higgins-Reardon Funeral Homes, Austintown Chapel and Saturday from 9 to 9:45 a.m. at St. Mary's Byzantine Catholic Church.
In lieu of flowers, material tributes may take the form of donations to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 501 St Jude Place Memphis, TN 38105 or St. Mary's Byzantine Catholic Church, 356 S. Belle Vista Ave., Youngstown, OH 44509.
