YOUNGSTOWN - Prayers will be held on Friday, Nov. 15, at 9:30 a.m. at the Higgins-Reardon Funeral Homes, Poland Chapel, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. at the Holy Family Church for William D. Carney, 88, who passed away Sunday evening at Masternick Memorial Health Care Center.
William was born May 21, 1925, in Youngstown, a son of the late John F. Carney and Florence (Callahan) Carney.
William was a 1943 graduate of The Rayen School. After graduation, he joined the U.S. Marine Corps. During World War II, he was stationed in the Philippines and China. In 1965, he was with one of the first companies of U.S. Marines to land in Da Nang, South Vietnam, providing security and helping to establish fuel farms for the 1st Marine Air Wing. He went on to serve a second tour of duty in Vietnam in 1967. William retired as a Gunnery Sergeant after 26 years of service. While stateside, he was stationed at Quantico, Va., Cherry Point, N.C., and Camp LeJeune, N.C. While in the Marines, he played for several of his companies' fast pitch softball teams as a pitcher.
Following his retirement from the Marine Corps, he became a security guard for the Commercial Shearing Company in Youngstown, retiring after 12 years. He was a member of the China Marine Association and a member of St. Edward's Church. William also played softball for the Commercial Shearing Men's Softball Team and was the manager for their Women's Softball Team. He managed the Youngstown Steel Door Softball Team that won the Steel Valley Class B Championship in 1981.
His wife, the former Therese Eileen Whalen, whom he married Feb. 12, 1949, preceded him in death on Nov. 5, 1977.
William leaves his three daughters, Mary Patricia Gilboy of Youngstown, Barbara Jean Carney of Mesa, Ariz., and Erin Ann (Thomas) Carney-Chizmar of Youngstown; two sons, William Michael (Mary) Carney of Poland, and Terrence Patrick (Michelle) Carney of Stow; nine grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and many loved nieces and nephews.
William was also preceded in death by his brother, John F. Carney Jr. in August of 1991.
Family and friends may call Thursday from 4 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home.

The Carney family would like to give special thanks to Dr. Scott Tofil, to Comfort Keepers, especially Lorraine Sharp, and to his granddaughter, Kelly Ann Burgy, for all their care the past 16 months. They would also like to thank the staff, nurses, and aides at Masternick Memorial for all of their care the past three weeks.
