CANFIELD - William R. "Grandpa Rick" Croes Sr., 61, of New Castle, Del., passed away Sunday afternoon at his residence of an apparent heart attack.
Rick was born Aug. 28, 1949, in Wilmington, Del., to the late William P. and Emily Gilkey Croes.
Grandpa Rick, as most knew him, loved nature, sailing and listening to music.
He came to the Mahoning Valley in 1992 from New Castle, Del. Rick retired from General Motors Lordstown Assembly Plant as a supervisor. He was a graduate of the University of Delaware and Hiram College, and attended Youngstown State University.
Rick was active with the Canfield Band Parents, Austintown Soccer Club, and the Caravel Academy Buccaneers. He volunteered his time with the American Red Cross and the Hospice of the Valley. Rick was a proud former member of the Wilmington Manor Fire Co. in New Castle, Del.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Rick is survived by his wife of 39 years, Susan Wample Croes; his daughter, Cindy Croes-Lanspeary of New Castle, Del.; his sons, William R. Croes Jr. and Robert M. Croes, both of Canfield; two grandsons, Jonathan and Daniel Croes-Lanspeary; as well as two faithful K-9 companions, Sheba and Gizzy.
A memorial service will be held at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 22, in Austintown Township Park at the Celebration Grove, 6000 Kirk Road in Austintown.
Arrangements have been entrusted to the Higgins-Reardon Funeral Home, Boardman-Canfield Chapel.
