William Crowe

AUSTINTOWN - Prayers will begin Tuesday morning at 9:30 a.m. at the Higgins-Reardon Funeral Home, Austintown Chapel, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial celebrated at 10 a.m. at St. Christine Church for William J. Crowe, 84, who passed away at his home Thursday after suffering cardiac arrest.

William was born July 10, 1926, in New York, the son of William F. and Loretto Connolly Crowe.

He had served in the Marine Corps, during World War II in the South Pacific in many battles including Okinawa. He had been wounded in battle three times and received the Purple Heart with clusters, and was to be awarded the Silver Star by his commanding officer but his platoon leader was killed in battle before the presentation.

Mr. Crowe was a graduate of Youngstown College, where he received a bachelors degree in Business and completed post graduate studies in Metallurgy. He began his working career in 1953, at the Youngstown Sheet and Tube Corporation and retired from LTV Steel in 1984, as a foreman after 31 years.

Bill was always very active socially. He loved to dance and spend time with family and friends. He was a charter member of St. Christine Church and was a member of the VFW and the Fraternal Order of Eagles No. 3298 in Austintown. He also loved to work in his yard and had won awards at the Canfield Fair for his dahlias. He had competed in the Penn Relays as a track star in high school and remained active his entire life enjoying all sports, including swimming, racket ball, and he was a boxing enthusiast.

He is survived by his daughter, Elizabeth A. Crowe of Delaware, Ohio, two sons, William J. Crowe Jr. of Austintown and James R. Crowe of Cleveland, two sisters, Gloria L. Zvinglis of Syosset, N.Y. and Miriam L. Crowe of Woodside, N.Y.; and a brother, Kenneth C. Rae Crowe of Melville, N.Y.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, the former Lois E. Newell, whom he had met after World War II, while he was still serving in the Marine Corps and she was serving as a Navy Wave. They were married Jan. 19, 1946, in Baltimore's Cathedral and she passed away after 54 years of marriage on Nov. 9, 2000.

Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday at the Higgins-Reardon Funeral Home, Austintown Chapel.

The family has requested that contributions take the form of donations to the St. Vincent de Paul Society in his memory.
