William John Gorman

CANFIELD — William John Gorman died at home in his sleep Tuesday, July 9, 2024, after a long illness.

Bill was born April 29, 1935, in Madison, Wisconsin, to Eugene John Gorman and Delores Raynoha Gorman.After high school, he spent two years in the U.S. Army and four years at the University of Wisconsin, Madison, graduating with a degree in international relations. In 1961, when the Berlin Wall went up, the 380th M.I. Detachment, Bill’s Reserve unit, was called into active duty for one year.Bill married Anita Grace Malmquist on Sept. 8, 1962. While they were living in Chicago, Bill worked for the public health service and the Chicago Board of Health. He later earned a master’s degree in public health education from the University of Michigan. In 1969, Bill and his young family moved to northeast Ohio when Bill was named assistant director of the Health Systems Agency of Northeastern Ohio. In the 1980s, Bill became an independent financial adviser, a position he held until he was in his 80s.Bill was an avid runner and actively involved in the Youngstown Peace Race for a number of years. He was a talented artist whose watercolors have given pleasure to many. For many years Bill sang in the choir and served as a cantor at St. Michael Parish, Canfield. He played the harmonica and string bass with Dulci-More Folk & Traditional Musicians. Together with his wife, he traveled widely in the United States and in Europe. He took time to visit friends who were ill and was especially kind and helpful to his mother-in-law and father-in-law in their declining years. Bill is survived by his wife, Anita; daughter, Ingrid Marie Gorman; son, Peter David Gorman; grandson, Patrick Carl Andrews; granddaughter, Imogene Brenna Weiss; and his sister, Mary Margaret Gorman. Bill was preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Jeanne Gorman; and his brother, John Gorman. A Funeral Mass was held Friday, July 12, 2024, at St. Paul Parish, Salem, with family members in attendance. Bill was laid to rest in Canfield Village Cemetery. William J. Gorman will be greatly missed by his family and friends.
